Accreditation: underpinning the provision of traditional energy sources

UKAS accreditation plays a key role in delivering confidence in the extraction, refining, transportation and measurement of oil, gas, and similar hydrocarbons.

UKAS accreditation ensures that suppliers, purchasers and regulators can have confidence in the safety, analysis, physical parameters and the measurement of these commodities is carried out by competent organisations.

Accredited Laboratory Testing to ISO/IEC 17025

UKAS accredits testing and calibration laboratories to ISO/IEC 17025; General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. UKAS accreditation uses criteria and procedures specifically to determine technical competence. Laboratory accreditation assesses factors relevant to a laboratory’s ability to produce precise, accurate tests and data including the technical competence of staff, the validity and appropriateness of test methods, the suitability and maintenance of test equipment, the testing environment, sampling, handling and transportation of test items, and the quality assurance of test data.

Accredited testing is carried out on a number of products including petroleum and petroleum products, recycled oil, solid fuels, natural gas, industrial and refinery gases, medical gases, compressed gases, and trade effluent.

Accredited calibration is carried out to determine flow, viscosity, density, temperature, humidity and capacitance.

Accredited Certification Schemes

UKAS accredits certification bodies to ISO/IEC 17021; Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of management systems to provide certification in a range of areas that are relevant to the oil and gas sector. These include ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems (QMS), ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems certification (EMS), ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems (EnMS), ISO 22301 Business Continuity Management systems (BCM), OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management systems (OHSAS), and ISO 28000 Supply Chain Security Management Systems (SCSMS).

Accredited Inspection Programmes

Inspection bodies are accredited to ISO/IEC 17020: Requirements for the operation of various types of bodies performing inspection throughout the oil and gas supply chain. This includes the inspection of pressure systems, storage vessels and tanks, process plant and systems, technical & commercial oil & gas measurement systems, environmental metering systems and general industrial metering systems, onshore and pre-shipment inspection, and the carriage of dangerous goods by rail or road.

Accredited Reference Material Producers

UKAS accredits Reference Material Producers (RMP) to ISO Guide 34 (currently in the process of being replaced by ISO 17034) for a number of materials including analysed gases, gas mixtures, and gaseous materials.

Accredited Notified Bodies

UKAS provides accreditation for organisations seeking appointment by a UK competent authority under EC Directives or UK Regulations.
