Accreditation: supporting safety and control in the use of chemicals

Chemicals are used in a growing number of sectors, from pesticides and petrochemicals, to toys and paint. UKAS accreditation ensures that consumers, suppliers, purchasers and regulators can have confidence that analysis and determination of the physical parameters of these chemicals is carried out by competent organisations.

Accredited Laboratory Testing to ISO/IEC 17025

UKAS accredits chemistry laboratories to ISO/IEC 17025; General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories that serve a broad range of industrial sectors. UKAS accreditation uses criteria and procedures specifically to determine technical competence. Laboratory accreditation assesses factors relevant to a laboratory’s ability to produce precise, accurate tests and data including the technical competence of staff, the validity and appropriateness of test methods, the suitability and maintenance of test equipment, the testing environment, sampling, handling and transportation of test items, and the quality assurance of test data.

Chemical analysis is carried out on a number of products including food and food products, plastics, fuels and oils, detergents, soils, paints and coatings, waters, toys and consumer goods, air, textiles, metals, wood, glass, cosmetics, and construction products.

Accredited Certification Schemes

UKAS accredits certification bodies to ISO/IEC 17021; Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of management systems to provide certification in a range of areas that are relevant to the chemical sector. These include ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems (QMS), ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems certification (EMS), ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems (EnMS), ISO 22301 Business Continuity Management systems (BCM), OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management systems (OHSAS), and ISO 28000 Supply Chain Security Management Systems (SCSMS).

Accredited Inspection Programmes

Inspection bodies are accredited to ISO/IEC 17020: Requirements for the operation of various types of bodies performing inspection throughout the chemical supply chain. This includes the inspection of pressure systems, storage vessels and tanks, process plant and systems, and the carriage of dangerous goods by rail or road.

Accredited Proficiency Testing Schemes

UKAS accredits Proficiency Testing (PT) Providers for a range of chemistry schemes to ISO/IEC 17043: Conformity assessment - General requirements for proficiency testing. These schemes involve chemical analysis of food and food products, beverages, waters, clinical, forensics, and consumer products.

Accredited Reference Material Producers

UKAS accredits Reference Material Producers (RMP) to ISO Guide 34 (currently in the process of being replaced by ISO 17034) for a number of materials including drinks, foodstuffs, animal feed, herbal medicines, gases and water.

Accredited Notified Bodies

UKAS provides accreditation for organisations seeking appointment by a UK competent authority under EC Directives or UK Regulations.
